Tram Ride

The Calcutta Tramways evoke an old world charm and is an integral part of our city’s historical past  that weaves a poetic magic in the mind of the travelers traversing the tram routes in the nostalgic tram cars. Our school organized a Heritage Tram ride for our students to make them aware of this wonderful means of communication in our city that is the most environmental friendly.

The purpose was to take our students along the historical tram route of Khidderpore to Esplanade via Maidan and view the historical heritage buildings, monuments and statues that come along the tram route.

The Kolkata Tram Company allotted us a tram named Dhawno Dhanye. Our journey began from Khidderpore Tram Depot. The ride took us through Khidderpore where students could get a glimpse of the very old buildings of Kolkata with their arches and minarets, the bazars and its old world charm. The tram chugged through the old Khidderpore Bridge and headed towards Maidan. Students could view the statues of Raja Rammohan Roy, the Fort William walls, the G.P.O, Akashvani Bhavan and finally the Ochterlony Monument. However it was not simply the destinations that impressed the learners. The journey through the Maidan was breathtaking to say the least. Furthermore, each time a destination point was reached, the learners were briefed on the architectural uniqueness of the formidable buildings or structures.
Having always had our firm faith pinned to inclusivity, we had yearned to take a handful of underprivileged children along, to enjoy this trip alongside our students. Our faith pinned to our longings, we did just what we wished to do. For our learners this was an added learning experience because it was through debriefing these children, that our own students enhanced their knowledge better.

The students felt a part of the city’s past by weaving in the aura, aroma and architectural beauties of our City of Joy.

Children always learn better if the fun quotient is high. This trip gifted them just that fun-learn opportunity to cater to their inquisitive minds. To be able to grasp information and concepts with willingness and pleasure was the objective of the trip and the outcome was exactly as expected.
