Trip to Victoria Memorial

Our school coordinated with the chief curator and secretary Dr. Jayanta Sengupta and the Education unit of Victoria Memorial, who gave their consent to conduct an educational trip on 3rd Feb 2018 for our students within Victoria Memorial. The objective was to interact with these experts so that they could impart their knowledge about this 95years old built heritage, specially about the conservation  aspects and help us to accomplish our mission “To preserve and unite”.

Education unit of VICTORIA MEMORIAL under the guidance of coordinator Shumyyah offered us with a wide range of information about Victoria Memorial, so that our students could reach out to the community at large about the mission of Victoria Memorial. Our students were granted special permission by the chief curator to take photographs of the artifact and interact with the general public to raise awareness about this heritage building. We were made aware of the activity club, which will target our younger groups this year from our school, so that they raise the awareness, in the neighborhood about built heritage through posters, slogans etc.​

  1. To sharpen our sense of the British- Bengali relationship, and learn about the Indo-saracenic style of architecture in Markana marble.

  2. We wanted to reach out to the community that VICTORIA MEMORIAL in not only a visual ecstacy which was opened to public 1921, but also has impressive collection of paintings and legacy of Indian freedom movement.

  3. Our students reached out to the public on that day making them aware that if VICTORIA MEMORIAL could be made with voluntary subscriptions of the citizens  of Calcutta in 1906-1911, what role should the citizens play in preserving this national pride today because this is not just the duty of the historians, students, and curator of the museum.

  4. It is an amazing attraction for all age groups of people, a paradise for morning walkers. Our students made the public aware through our school banner “To preserve and unite” within the precinct of 64 acres of sprawling green of VICTORIA MEMORIAL that we need to conserve this heritage site.

  5. Students explained the visitors about the unique combination of heritage, architecture and museum.

Outcome: 

  1. Students researched that travelers rate Victoria Memorial as India'a best museum.

  2. Students noticed that visitors had access to all areas of Victoria Memorial and all are aware that Victoria Memorial conducts cultural events at regular intervals on its campus - it is a open space cultural center.

  3. The curator interacted with the students and spoke about the renovation and mordernisation programme funded by the Union Ministry of culture, and the authorities are carrying out a preventive conservation not a chemical one but Fullers earth treatment to clean the heritage site.

  4. Students conducted a small survey and found out that Victoria Memorial records a high time record sale of tickets in October  due the Son-et-Lumiere programme - Pride & glory - story of calcutta - outreach is tremendous as the light and sound programe is both in English and local language Bengali. This programe is conducted by Bengal Chambers of Commerce as a part of preservation of national pride.

  5. Students learned about the vast collection of remnants of this stately memorial and the treasure true like Ain - I - Akbari (antique book on Mughal administration and economy) illustrated work of Shakespeare, paintings, weapons, textile, stamps etc.

  6. Students learnt that Calcutta Tercentenary Trust is entrusted with the conservation and understanding of India's European history. Victoria Memorial is tied with NID and NBCC to deal with multitude of deterioration problem.

  7. Victoria Memorial disseminates knowledge among public about art objects, through cultural programmes, interactive educational activities, brings in positive social change - into non - museum organization and community outreach, for example in the backdrop of Victoria Memorial - the biggest crowd puller was the Art installation - Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram. As moon descended on the lawns of Victoria Memorial it was a project of British Council which merged science with art.
